Bangor police investigate burglaries of 3 vehicles

The Bangor Police Department is looking for information regarding three cars that were burglarized Saturday while parked outside Sawyer Arena off Thirteenth Street.

According to police reports, at around 5 p.m. Saturday three vehicles had windows smashed and cash, credit cards, cell phones and purses stolen.

Among the victims were Brian Collins, 58, of Auburn and Heidi Masher, 44, of North Waterboro, who had a Verizon cell phone and $500 in cash stolen from a purse that was left in their car.

Nancy Violette, 50, of Deer Isle had a credit card and driver’s license taken, and Alan and Michelle Reese, 45 and 44 respectively, had a U.S. Cellular phone, a bank card and cash stolen.

At least one of the vehicles was locked. There were no known suspects as of Sunday evening. Anyone with information about the burglaries is urged to call Bangor police at 947-7384.

A Newburgh woman drove into a road sign in Bangor early Sunday morning and was later arrested for OUI, police said.

Officer Kerry Libby of the Bangor police was on patrol on Union Street at around 12:42 a.m. Sunday. He said in his report that he observed a black Volkswagen Jetta turn onto Union from Main Street, and then try to make a hard right turn the wrong way onto Columbia Street, a one-way street.

Instead of completing the turn, the vehicle went up over the curb and slammed into the “Do Not Enter” sign, knocking it to the ground, then stopped on the grass. All four tires came off the car.

Libby approached the vehicle, which was driven by Sarah Creamer, 21, of Newburgh. He reported that he immediately smelled a strong odor of alcohol. There were three other passengers in the car.

Creamer claimed she could not see out her windows because of the rain, and was not familiar with the area. She gave Libby her license, at which point he asked her if she had been drinking.

She admitted that she had had six mixed drinks at a bar. After performing several tests to determine if she was intoxicated, Libby arrested her for OUI. At the police station an Intoxilyzer test was performed, which showed a blood alcohol content of 0.10 percent, police said.

Bangor police Officer Rob Angelo was parked in the Club Gemini parking lot at around 2 a.m. Sunday when a bouncer from the club pointed out a large truck, the driver of which, a female, was revving the engine loudly while she tried to put the truck into gear.

Angelo said he followed the vehicle, which made a very wide right turn onto Harlow Street, driving over several parking spaces on the opposite side of the road.

The driver started heading outbound on Harlow, but drove over the curb on the right side of the road, going about 12 mph, according to Angelo.

She also drove onto the curb both in the turning lane at the corner of Harlow and Cumberland Street, and on the bridge over the Kenduskeag Stream. The truck, never going above 15 mph, had almost run into a guard rail when Angelo pulled the vehicle over near the corner of Fourteenth Street and Valley Avenue.

The driver, Leslie Butterfield, 24, of Hermon, was visibly intoxicated and could not retrieve her license and registration, so the passenger in the car got it for her, according to Angelo.

He reported that at that point an empty beer bottle fell out of the car. Angelo asked the driver to perform several tests to determine if she was intoxicated, but he said Butterfield said she was too drunk to do them all. Angelo arrested her for OUI and had Officer Al Woolley transport her to the police station.

Correction: ? An item in “From Police Files” on Page B3 in Monday’s final edition should have identified Bangor police Officer Kerry Libby as a female police officer.
