An accident Tuesday night on Union Street in Hermon is still under investigation, but a Penobscot County sheriff’s deputy said a woman lost control while apparently trying to make a U-turn and went off the road.
Constable Deputy Noel Santiago, who covers Hermon, said that when he arrived on the scene, the motorist was slumped over the steering wheel and unresponsive. Santiago said that he knocked on the window but received no response, so he broke the window to open the door to reach the woman.
As he checked her pulse, the woman sat up. An ambulance arrived and took the woman to a Bangor hospital. Her name was not being released as authorities said the accident is still under investigation. Santiago said that neither alcohol nor drugs were factors.
Bangor police Monday arrested a transient after the man refused to quiet down and return to a gurney at St. Joseph Hospital, where he was staying briefly for observation.
Louis “Louie” Bernard, 43, who has a history of public intoxication, was told by hospital staff and Bangor police Officer Jason McAmbley to settle down and return to the gurney, according to the officer’s police report. McAmbley even escorted Bernard back to the gurney but reported that Bernard tried to strike him several times and was swearing.
After a physician assistant cleared Bernard from the hospital, McAmbley arrested the man and used an arm hold to get a struggling Bernard to the floor. McAmbley charged Bernard with assault, disorderly conduct and refusing to submit to arrest or detention. At Penobscot County Jail, Bernard would only sign the assault summons, claiming that he did not agree with the other charges.
