McDonald’s All American basketball nominees

Eight area high school seniors have been recognized among the finest basketball players in the country through their nominations to the 2006 McDonald’s All American High School Basketball Teams.

The Maine players are among 2,500 basketball standouts in the nation nominated by the McDonald’s All American Basketball Team selection committee, a group of nationally prominent basketball experts.

As nominees, the players will be considered for the 48 positions on the final four – two boys and two girls – 2006 McDonald’s All American High School Basketball Teams that will compete in the 29th anniversary of the McDonald’s All American High School Basketball Games.

Area nominees are:

Bangor Christian Schools: Brock Bradford.

Bangor High School: Mark Socoby.

Brewer High School: Katie Quimby, Chris Wilson.

Hampden Academy: Jordan Cook.

Old Town High School: Katie Bergeron, Logan Bouchard, Jennifer Jones.

The final teams will be announced in late February. This year’s McDonald’s All American Games will be played Wednesday, March 29, at San Diego State University.

The boys game once again will be broadcast live on ESPN, and the girls game will be carried on ESPN2 at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 6.

Proceeds from both games will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. The Ronald McDonald House program has provided a “home away from home” for millions of family members of seriously ill children since its inception in 1974.

Throughout its 29-year history, the games have raised almost $5 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities.

McDonald’s All American alumni include current Women’s NCAA stars Shanna Zolman of Tennessee, Ann Strother of the University of Connecticut and Seimone Augustus of Louisiana State University, and former NBA stars such as Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson, along with current stars Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves, LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets.
