Four people injured in Alexander car crash

ALEXANDER – Four people were injured Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on Route 9.

According to Trooper Miles Carpenter with the Maine State Police, the accident occurred at about 2:45 p.m., one-tenth of a mile from the intersection of Route 9 and Flat Road.

Michael Berry, 33, of Newport was headed south when he noticed that the car ahead of him had swerved into the northbound lane, Carpenter said. He observed a vehicle driven by Leo Kneeland, 57, of Wesley headed toward him in his lane.

Berry pulled into the northbound lane in an effort to avoid a collision with Kneeland’s vehicle, but Kneeland also swerved back into his lane and the two vehicles struck almost head-on.

It appears that Kneeland had fallen asleep at the wheel, Carpenter said.

Kneeland, Berry and two passengers in his vehicle, Elizabeth Boyd, 30, of Calais and her 14-month-old child, were injured in the accident and were taken by ambulance to Calais Regional Hospital.

Berry, Boyd and the child were treated and later released on Sunday. Kneeland was kept overnight and released on Monday.

Kneeland’s Ford and Berry’s GMC pickup were destroyed in the accident.

Charges are pending, but the accident remains under investigation, Carpenter said.
