It wasn’t until one week ago that I discovered my 10-year-old daughter had been riding the school bus for weeks with a convicted sex offender. I, like many other Glenburn parents, am shocked and appalled at this oversight. I could rant and rave to great length, but I will reserve that for today’s public meeting. All of us concerned parents are angry, frustrated and simply wish to know – who is responsible?
Glenburn school officials say they were unaware, as this man volunteered through the Cyr Bus Co. However, once it was brought to their attention, they waited until just recently to inform us. Why?
Cyr Bus Co. has yet to comment on the issue. They are required by law to perform background checks on anyone wishing to become a school bus driver. Shouldn’t that law apply to anyone wishing to be on a school bus at all? And if it doesn’t, why didn’t Cyr Bus Co. use common sense in taking the initiative to perform a background check on this man?
I think I speak for all Glenburn parents when I say I will not accept any excuses for jeopardizing my child’s safety. We are all very fortunate this matter wasn’t any more serious than it already is. What if someone’s child was assaulted? What if it were my child? I am sure if that were the case, then someone would be held responsible.
This incident was more than a simple mistake and someone needs to take responsibility for it.
