Rosser’s FTs help Vikings sink Trojans

BAR HARBOR – Caleb Rosser sank both ends of a one-and-one with six seconds to play as the No. 10 Caribou Vikings upset No. 7 Mount Desert Island 38-36 in an Eastern Maine Class B boys basketball preliminary game Wednesday.

The win sets up a match-up with Aroostook County rival and No. 2 seed Presque Isle Friday afternoon at 4:35 at the Bangor Auditorium.

Kyle Corrigan chipped in with nine points for Caribou.

Kyle Staples hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points to lead the Trojans.

At Lincoln, Dylan Hanscom grabbed an offensive rebound and scored with a half-second remaining in overtime to lead No. 8 Mattanawcook Academy past No. 9 Camden Hills of Rockport.

Steve Andrews paced the Lynx with 16 points and Hanscom added 14 points. Derek Libbey scored 12 points.

Christian Pieri hit a half-court 3-pointer at the buzzer at the end of regulation to force overtime for Camden Hills.

Pieri led the Windjammers with 15 points and Paul Campbell had 11 points. Gordon Fischer scored 10 points.

At Pittsfield, Andy Tracy scored a game-high 16 points and fifth seed Maine Central Institute outscored No. 12 John Bapst of Bangor 33-19 over the final three quarters to advance to the quarterfinals.

MCI will take on No. 4 Medomak Valley of Waldoboro, 13-5, in Saturday’s 9:35 a.m. match-up at the Bangor Auditorium.

MCI outscored the Crusaders 12-4 in the second period behind Hunter Nichols’ four points and Tracy had seven in the third as MCI expanded the lead to 28-22.

Eric Sobey had nine points for the winners and Nichols contributed seven.

Bapst, which closed to within three in the fourth quarter, received 10 points from Joe Novak and eight from Logan Adams.

Sophomore guard Lee Suvlu added 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Rams, who will play defending state champion Hampden Academy in a regional quarterfinal on Saturday.

Sophomore center Ryan Weston chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds, as Bangor outrebounded Brewer 31-14.

Senior guard Chris Wilson led Brewer with 16 points, while Ryan Babin scored eight.

Reid McLaughlin had a goal and an assist for 15-4 Brewer. Dylan Fitzpatrick scored a second period goal and Devin Fitzpatrick had two assists. Aaron Saunders stopped 22 of 26 shots.
