Sunkhaze expedition
OLD TOWN – Ski, hike or snowshoe with the Friends of Sunkhaze at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. Participants should rendezvous at the National Fish and Wildlife Office, 1168 Main St., Old Town. The day will include hot stew and drinks at a deep woods camp in the Sunkhaze Wildlife Refuge. The event is free of charge.
Snow sculpture contest
BREWER – The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for teams to enter in the Penobscot Landing advisory committee’s 2006 Winterfest Snow Creation Contest. The contest will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, at Doyle Field as part of the Winterfest Celebration. The first prize in the contest is $500.
Teams are limited to 12 people, and at least one team member must be under age 18 for every five people on the team. Bonus points will be awarded for team members under age 12.
Snow creations must be made of snow and have no supporting structures. They will be judged on originality, artistic merit, degree of difficulty, visual impact and use of color.
The Winterfest Celebration will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18, in Brewer. Activities include an ice carving demonstration and contest, a chili-chowder cook-off, a children’s carnival, musical performances, a French toast breakfast and a dinner dance at the Muddy Rudder Restaurant in Brewer.
