Ceremony honoring Mahaney set for May

ORONO – There will be a ceremony honoring the late Larry Mahaney on the field between Mahaney Diamond and the Mahaney Dome on the University of Maine campus on May 6 before the Maine-Albany America East doubleheader. It will start at 11 a.m.

Philanthropist Mahaney, the former president and CEO of Webber Energy Fuels, died last Saturday of complications from a stroke. He donated millions of dollars to the university, his alma mater, as well as several other institutions.

His son, Kevin, said that in lieu of flowers, friends and well-wishers are asked to donate to their local youth sports programs. He said his father, a former baseball, football, and basketball coach, believed strongly in the value of youth sports and the role they play in the development of young people.
