BANGOR – After sometimes contentious negotiations and several months of working without a contract, teachers here have approved an agreement that was reached with the school committee earlier this month.
Details of the contract will be made available after it is approved by the Bangor School Committee, which will meet on Feb. 27, Cynthia Fish, chief negotiator for the Bangor Education Association, said Monday.
“It’s a good contract,” Fish said.
While declining to give an exact tally of votes, Fish said the agreement was approved by an “overwhelming majority” of the 260 or so voting members of the teachers union.
Negotiations have been under way for about a year and teachers have been working without a contract since September.
“We should know Monday night, February 27, whether we have a contract,” Fish said.
Teachers voted at their respective schools during the week of Feb. 13 and the total was tallied after school Friday, according to Fish.
“I think it’s fair,” she said of the agreement. “It took into consideration the interests and the needs of the teachers while also considering the limitations and the needs of the school committee. I think both sides would say it’s a fair contract. There was give and take on both sides.”
Among the sticking points revealed during negotiations this past year have been salary increases, teacher share of insurance costs and language authorizing personal leave.
Discussions had been contentious at times and dozens of teachers began showing up at school committee meetings as a reminder that they were working without a contract.
They burst into applause at the Feb. 6 school committee meeting when chairman Martha Newman announced with a broad smile that a tentative agreement had been reached.
