Business leader Sargent nears 100

OLD TOWN – A well-known local businessman is expected to celebrate with family and friends at his winter home in Florida when he reaches a milestone on Wednesday.

Herbert E. Sargent, who founded construction company H.E. Sargent Inc. in 1926, is turning 100 years old.

Herbert R. Sargent, president of the company and grandson of the soon-to-be centenarian, said Monday that about 100 family members and friends are expected to attend a party Wednesday in Daytona, Fla., to celebrate his grandfather’s 100th birthday. He said his grandfather has spent each winter in Daytona for the past several decades.

“It’s a pretty small get-together,” Herbert R. Sargent said. “Having family down here is the thing he’s looking forward to the most.”

Among the guests will be children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren of the H.E. Sargent founder, according to the grandson. He said that not including spouses, there likely will be between 50 and 60 direct descendents of Herbert E. Sargent at the event.

“He’s in great health and great spirits,” Herbert R. Sargent said. “He’s as sharp as a tack.”

The Sargent family sold H.E. Sargent to a French construction company in 1988. Herbert R. Sargent founded his own construction company, Sargent and Sargent, in 1992, which then bought back his grandfather’s firm last year.

Herbert E. Sargent continues to live next door to H.E. Sargent Inc.’s office on Bennoch Road in Old Town when he is in Maine, according to his grandson.
