NEWRY – The Freeport boys and girls ski teams earned first-place finishes in the giant slalom during the first day of the state Class C ski meet Monday at Sunday River.

Teams from Fort Kent also turned in strong efforts with the girls placing second and the boys capturing fourth.

In the boys race, Alden Collett paced Freeport with a first-place time of 1 minute, 34.75 seconds for a combined two runs while teammates Kyle Warren finished fourth (1:40.59) and Nate Fuller placed eighth (1:43.76).

Derek Pelletier paced Fort Kent with a seventh-place finish (1:42.10) while teammates Carter Vaillancourt captured ninth (1:44.47) and Jesse Jandreau took 13th (1:47.09).

Also earning places in the top 15 were: Derek Smith of Central Aroostook of Mar Hill (fifth, 1:41.60) and Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln’s Ben Delano (12th, 1:46.32) and Cullen Ward (15th, 1:48.09).

In the girls race, Ilka Hadlock raced to a first-place finish in 1:37.32 to lead Freeport while teammate Nicole Moore placed third in 1:44.34.

Madawaska’s Kaitlyn Pelletier captured second place in 1:38.54 while teammate Tracie Cyr finished ninth in 1:48.32 to help the Owls place fifth overall.

Fort Kent earned its second-place finish behind Cassi Vaillancourt (fifth, 1:44.81), Lindsay Cyr (10th, 1:50.05), and Kristyn Labrie (14th, 1:52.90).

John Bapst of Bangor’s Maren Askins recorded a 15th-place finish in 1:53.62.
