If you are looking for a new hobby, simply love beautiful needlework or want to try your hand at spinning, weaving, embroidery, knitting, crocheting or other fiber-related skills, the Fiber Arts Exhibition set for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Bangor Public Library is the place for you. Christy Coombs, a reference librarian accomplished at stitching, organized the exhibit. One of her many needlework interests is reproducing historic, counted cross stitch samplers.

Scattered throughout the library will be 29 area crafters exhibiting and demonstrating everything from crewel embroidery to rag rugs. Books about the needle arts from the library’s stacks will be on display and available for borrowing. Some of the exhibitors will have demonstrations geared toward children.

Visitors who attend the exhibit can talk to the fiber folks and learn how they got started at their craft. Find out what inspires them, get questions answered, learn where to take classes, find sources for materials and mill around in the company of others who like making stuff. The event also will offer opportunities for visitors to try stitching, weaving, braiding, knitting, crocheting or other crafts.

Here’s who and what visitors will find at the exhibit:

. The Northern Neighbors Quilters have finished a quilt they will raffle during the Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Race to be held the first weekend in March in Fort Kent. The quilt theme is “Hitting the Trails” and features a husky dog in the center motif. The color scheme is burgundy, gold and many assorted and colorful scraps. The Can-Am logo also is incorporated into the design.

Quilter Nanette Pelletier of Eagle Lake, who worked on the quilt, said it took about two months for 20 women to complete the quilt. This is the fourth year the group has made and raffled a quilt during the dog sled races. Proceeds always go to a charity. Last year the quilt makers donated money earned from the quilt raffle to aid Hurricane Katrina victims, tsunami victims, and The Battered Women’s Project.

The quilt measures 78 inches by 94 inches and comes with a pair of matching pillowcases. It was machine-quilted by Anne Freeman of Hermon. Tickets for the quilt are $1 each or seven for $5. Tickets will be available at several locations in Fort Kent during the Can-Am weekend. Tickets also are available by calling Lee Soucie at 834-6363 or e-mail lesouc@sjv.net. The drawing will be conducted at the Can-Am awards banquet.

. A new business in Winterport, Sun’s Up Quilting Classes, located at 25 Back Winterport Road, opened Feb. 4. Nancy Ronco offers classes for all ages. To learn more about class offerings, call 223-5950.
