RUMFORD – The Madawaska boys and Freeport girls earned victories Tuesday in the freestyle cross country competition at the state Class C ski championships held at Black Mountain.
Fort Kent placed second in the girls race, followed by Telstar of Bethel and John Bapst of Bangor. Freeport was second in the boys race, followed by Winthrop and Fort Kent.
Madawaska placed four racers among the top nine finishers in the boys race. Lucas Milliken of Waynflete in Portland won the 4.7-kilometer event in 12 minutes, 26.1 seconds, followed by Andrew Levesque of Madawaska, who finished 30 seconds behind in second place. George Bragdon (fifth in 13:02.2), Chris Dubois (eighth in 13:28.0), and Tyler Levesque (ninth in 13:34.2) rounded out the Owls’ top-nine contingent.
Derek Pelletier of Fort Kent placed seventh in 13:19.5.
Lucy Garrec of Freeport won the girls race in 13.28.1, followed by second-place Hilary McNamee of Fort Fairfield in 13:34.8. Justine Cyr (sixth in 14:38.5) led the Fort Kent contingent, while Jessica Caron (11th in 15:34.2) and Grace Boutot (12th in 15:34.4) also had top finishes for the Warriors.
In Alpine competiton at Sunday River in Newry, the Winthrop boys and Livermore Falls girls earned victories in the slalom.
Winthrop topped Freeport, Fort Kent, and John Bapst in the boys competition. Telstar’s Stephen Scotti won individual honors with a two-run time of 1 minute, 23.83 seconds, but Winthrop placed its top four skies among the top 11 finishers to earn the team award.
Fort Kent placed two skiers in the top 10: Carter Vaillancourt (fifth in 1:32.78) and Alex Mitchell (ninth in 1:36.2.
Nathaniel Hewitt of John Bapst placed eighth in 1:35.97.
Danielle Therrien’s first-place finish in 1:29.44 led Livermore Falls to the girls slalom title, with Therrien edging second-place Kaitlyn Pelletier of Madawaska by 0.27 seconds.
