Friday will be a very special day at Circles, The Salon, and for its owner Janet Sawyer, who will be hosting the third annual Locks of Love Day.

Locks of Love is a national nonprofit organization based in Lake Worth, Fla., that provides custom vacuum-fitted hairpieces made entirely from donated human hair for individuals, particularly children, who have experienced a total loss of scalp hair through illness, accident, disease or long-term medical conditions or treatment.

Sawyer explained the vacuum fit is designed for children who have experienced a total loss of scalp hair and does not require the use of tape or glue.

The third annual Locks of Love Day is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Circles, The Salon in Pittsfield.

Sawyer and her staff will offer free haircuts to those who donate their hair to Locks of Love.

She added that more than 1,000 children have been helped by the organization since it was founded in 1997, and one aspect that makes it particularly appealing is that since children make up more than 80 percent of the donors, Locks of Love is “a charity where children have an opportunity to help other children.”

To participate, your hair must be at least 10 inches long.

To reserve your time to donate your hair, call Circles, The Salon at 487-3200 for an appointment.

Jeff Franklin reports the Caribou Kiwanis Club is sponsoring its Keystone Kops fundraiser during Caribou’s Winter Carnival with “warrants for arrests” to be made Friday, Feb. 24.

You can also have an “arrest warrant” served by calling the American Legion, 498-2844, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24.

All proceeds benefit Kiwanis charities.

United Artists for Hope, which include musicians from all across Maine who donate their time and talent to help charities, have joined together to assist with the United Cerebral Palsy of Maine Camp CaPella Campaign.

UAH will present a multi-band benefit dance beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer, thanks to the generosity of owner Jeff Ashey, who donated the facility for the fundraiser.

Among the performing bands are Midnight Rose, Unstable, Wolf Creek, and Woody Sands & Rebecca Albright, with music ranging from country to classic rock and rhythm and blues.

Former camp counselor Candy Gray, who understands what it means for local children to have access to this wonderful program but who won’t have it available to them this summer, is coordinating the benefit.

Due to financial difficulties, UCP has closed the camp, but a groundswell of support has emerged, leading to the hope it can be reopened in 2007.

Admission to the benefit is $8 per person or $12 for couples.

A cash bar will be available, and you must be 21 or older to attend.

Additional sponsors are Clifton Country Store in Clifton, Tozier’s II in Bucksport and Cap’s Tavern in Brewer.

That multiband benefit dance begins at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer. The event ends at 1 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27.
