After-school art class

BREWER – The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the next session of its after-school art class program. Bev Langley will be the instructor. The next session begins March 8. Classes meet for seven weeks on Wednesdays at the Brewer Auditorium. The classes will features advanced art projects, but students of all ability levels may register.

Classes for 6- to 9-year-olds meet 3:45-5 p.m. and those age 9 and up meet 5:15-6:30 p.m.

The cost is $30 for Brewer residents, $35 for others. Project fee for the sculpting class is an additional $8. To register, call 989-5199.

Chess tournament

BANGOR – All Saints Chess Club will hold a chess tourney on Saturday, Feb. 25, at All Saints Catholic School, 166 State St. Doors open at 8 a.m.

The event will be a rated four-round tournament, with membership in the U.S. Chess Federation required.

There will be five sections:

. Kindergarten through grade three, unrated beginners, no membership required.

. Kindergarten through grade six, elementary.

. Kindergarten through grade eight, junior high.

. Kindergarten through grade 12, high school.

. Open.

Law Day Essay Contest

Entries from 12th-grade students who live in Penobscot County are being sought for the 2006 Law Day Essay Contest sponsored by the Penobscot County Bar Association. The theme is “Liberty Under Law: Separate Branches, Balanced Powers.” Home-schooled students also are eligible to enter the contest.

Entries must be 500 words or less, typed or handwritten in ink. Entries will be judged on accuracy of information, clarity of expression, content and originality.

Prizes are:

. First, $500

. Second, $250.

. Third, $100.

. Honorable mention, $50 each. Awards will be presented in May at a banquet.

Mail essays with cover sheets attached to: Marie Hansen, P.O. Box 924, Bangor 04402. Entries must be received by Friday, April 14.

Bates College

LEWISTON – These area students were named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Bates College:

. Kyle Curtis, Holden. A 2003 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, Curtis is the son of Craig and Sande Curtis of Holden.

. David Kelly, Bangor. A 2004 graduate of Bangor High School is the son of Robert and Suzanne Kelly of Bangor. He was named a Dana Scholar in 2005, one of 20 in his class recognized for academic excellence and leadership potential.

. Corey Pattison, Dedham. A 2005 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, he is the son of Susan Knowlton of Dedham and Paul Pattison of Martinez, Ga.

Boston College

BOSTON – Carrie Russell of Bucksport received a master’s degree in speech-language pathology during commencement ceremonies in January at Boston College.

Clark University

WORCESTER, Mass. – Area students named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Clark University:

. Alexandra Kelly of Bangor. Kelly, first honors, a graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, is studying psychology.

. Hilary Ohmart of Brewer. Ohmart, first honors, a graduate of Brewer High School, is studying communication and culture.

Clarkson University

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Area students who received honors for the fall semester at Clarkson University are:

. Kaylah Dunbar of Bucks-port, presidential scholar.

Presidential scholars carry at least a 3.8 grade point average. Dean’s list students achieve a 3.25 GPA.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

TROY, N.Y. – Trevor Gray of Orrington was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is studying mechanical engineering.

University of Maine

ORONO – The Upward Bound Program will hold a series of open house events at East Annex to introduce the public to the program, staff and current students. The schedule is:

. 2-4 p.m. Thursday, March 2.

. 2-4 p.m. Thursday, April 13.

. 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 18.

Brief presentations will be held, leaving time for light refreshments, to ask questions and to get to know more about what the Onward Program offers. Prospective students and others interested in the Division of Lifelong Learning program should attend the session.

Onward Program services are designed to assist nontraditional students in earning a four-year degree. At the heart of the program is a small supportive learning community that involves the commitment of students, faculty and staff. More information is available by calling 581-2319.

ORONO – Adrienne Given, a 2004 graduate of Bangor High School, has been invited to join Alpha Lambda Delta, the University of Maine chapter of the Association of College Honor Societies. She is a member of the Honors College.

Learn to map the spatial distribution of data with ArcView 3.3 software, and how to print customized maps from the DeLorme Topo USA 5.0 program. . Workshop: Introduction to Dreamweaver MX, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, Fogler Library classroom. Macromedia Dreamweaver MX is a sophisticated HTML editor and Web-authoring tool with easy visual editing features and customization options. No prior knowledge of Dreamweaver required. $30. . Workshop: GIS for Businesspeople, 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, Fogler Library classroom. Distribution of potential customers, their buying power and presence or absence of competitors might be difficult to interpret from raw statistics, but often may be seen quickly when mapped out. Learn how to map the spatial distribution of demographic, economic and commercial data with ArcView 3.3 software. Basic terminology, characteristics of formats, selected hardware and software. Includes demonstrations and some hands-on experience, with option to schedule time on the library’s GeoScan computer. $30. Call 581-1696 to register.

. Workshop: Intermediate Dreamweaver MX, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2, Fogler Library classroom. This is a continuation of the introductory workshop.
