Sunkhaze expedition

OLD TOWN – Ski, hike or snowshoe with the Friends of Sunkhaze at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. Participants should rendezvous at the National Fish and Wildlife Office, 1168 Main St., Old Town. Bring snowshoes, skis or boots.

The day will include hot stew and drinks at a deep woods camp in the Sunkhaze Wildlife Refuge. The event is free.

Winter fun day

BREWER – Brewer Parents and Teachers United will hold its eighth annual Winter Fun Day 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at the Brewer Auditorium. Attractions of the event include magician Bob Nixon, the University of Maine cheerleaders, Miss Maine 2006 Katee Sterns, Miss Maine 2005 Erica Commeau, Dora the Explorer, Scooby Doo and Chickadee clowns. Activities will include face painting, carnival games, door prizes and a chili challenge.

Outdoor activities planned if the weather cooperates are a biathlon – cross-country skiing and archery – for children in kindergarten to fifth grade, snowshoeing, sledding, ice skating and igloo building. Snowmobile rides will be available on Doyle Field.

Admission for the day is $1. Refreshments will be sold.

Volleyball leagues

BREWER – The Brewer Parks and Recreation Department has announced that it is taking registrations for its spring volleyball leagues. Team rosters will be accepted through Friday, March 3, at the Brewer Auditorium. League play will begin Monday, March 13. Leagues are scheduled for the following evenings:

. Women’s recreation, Sunday and Monday.

. Coed recreation, Tuesday and Wednesday.

. Coed power, Thursday.

League days and length of season may vary depending on the number of teams registered for each league. Because of time and space requirements, each league will have a limited number of teams which will be accepted on the first-paid, first entered basis. Glenburn Little League

GLENBURN – Glenburn Little League will hold registration for youngsters age 5-16:

. 6:30-8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, March 6 and 8, Glenburn Elementary School.

. 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, March 7 and 9, Levant Elementary School.

Participants must bring an official birth certificate and proof of residency to register.

Sports awards

BANGOR – The Central Maine Community College Athletic Department in Auburn announced that basketball player Amanda Webb of Bangor was selected for three awards at the recent Maine Small College banquet held in Bangor.

Webb was selected as the MSCC All-star, as an MSCC All-academic team member and as member of the MSCC All-tournament team at the weekend games in Bangor.

The Central Maine Community College women defeated the Eastern Maine Community College team 74-47 in the semi-final round of the Maine Small College Conference championship, then lost to Southern Maine Community College 39-38.

Learn to Skate program

ORONO – The Orono Parks and Recreation Department and Orono Youth Hockey are accepting registrations for its 2006 Learn to Skate program. The class is open to children ages 4 and up and will convene 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Feb. 28 and ending March 16, at the Alfond Ice Arena in Orono.

The cost of the program is $50 for Orono residents, $55 for others. Children are required to have skates, waterproof gloves and helmet. Call 866-0897 or 866-5065 for information.
