Canadian man gets 3 days for illegal border crossing

BANGOR – A Canadian man was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court to three days in jail for illegally crossing the border.

Jason Edwin Furlong, 31, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, is expected to be returned today to New Brunswick to face charges of sexual touching.

He faced up to six months in prison and a fine of up to $5,000 for entering the U.S. without inspection by immigration officers.

Furlong was arrested about 9 a.m. Tuesday in Calais. When a border patrol agent approached him, Furlong ran. He was apprehended about 50 yards from the intersection of Lowell and North streets, according to court documents.

A Canadian man was arrested with Furlong, but he was not charged.

Agents found a marijuana pipe and a small amount of marijuana on Furlong.

Furlong told Border Patrol agents that the two had crossed the St. Croix River about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. He also said he had made arrangements to be picked up by a friend at the Wal-Mart parking lot in Calais. Furlong said he was going to work for his friend, who is not identified in court documents, in Bangor.

Court documents do not explain how the two men crossed the St. Croix River into Calais. In the past, people have been arrested for illegal entry after walking across the railroad trestle near the Milltown border crossing north of Calais.

Last year, a 31-year-old Tennessee man drowned when he tried to enter Canada illegally by swimming across the St. Croix River from the Calais side. His Canadian girlfriend was waiting for him on the other side. Two fishermen found Chad W. Lamphear’s body on Sept. 14.

Officials do not believe Furlong swam across the river, but declined to say how he entered the country.
