Etna boy hit by car remains in hospital

BANGOR – A 12-year-old boy who was struck by a car in Etna on Tuesday remains hospitalized but is showing signs of improvement, his father said Thursday.

Tyler Campbell Stevens remains in the intensive care unit at Eastern Maine Medical Center where he is being treated for several broken bones and hemorrhaging of his brain, Kevin Stevens, the boy’s father said.

According to police, the boy was chasing a dog on Route 143, also called the Lakins Road, when a car struck him.

Stevens said his son had lost some of his memory after the accident and didn’t recognize his parents, his phone number, or even why he was in the hospital. But in recent days he has made some improvements, although Stevens said his son is “not out of the woods yet.”

Doctors have said it could be four more days or as much as two weeks before he can leave, the father said.

Michael Spencer, 28, of Holden was the driver of the car that struck the boy, but Trooper Forrest Simpson said the incident was an accident and no charges are being filed against the driver.
