Police say elderly targeted in scam Callers try to elicit drug information

MOUNT DESERT – Police are urging residents to be cautious after several residents received calls in what is apparently a drug scam targeting elderly residents.

According to Officer Chris Smith of the Mount Desert Police Department, three older residents have received similar calls, either from a male or female with foreign accents, attempting to obtain prescription and insurance information from them.

The first call came Wednesday.

“The callers said they were calling from an online pharmacy and asked if anyone at the residence took prescription drugs,” Smith said. “The first resident said she did, but would not discuss it over the phone.”

When the resident also refused to discuss insurance information, the caller hung up.

Two other residents received similar calls and also refused to discuss their information over the phone.

“It definitely appears that this is a scam,” Smith said. “And it is a safe assumption that they are targeting elderly residents.”

Smith said the residents were initially concerned that the callers were trying to find out what prescription drugs they were taking and might be targeting their homes.

None of the residents had caller ID on their phones, so police have not yet been able to trace the callers.

“As soon as we can get a callback number, we’ll try to find out what’s going on,” Smith said.

At this point, the calls appear to focused only in Mount Desert. None of the other island police departments have received this type of complaint.

Anyone who receives this type of call should refuse to divulge any information and contact their local police department.
