RANGELEY – A Durham teenager was killed Friday morning when he crashed his snowmobile on Haley Pond and was thrown into a tree.
Douglas White, 18, was riding a snowmobile with friends at about 3 a.m. when he hit an outcropping of land that he apparently didn’t see, said Marc Michaud of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
White was sent airborne and struck a tree about 9 or 10 feet above the ground, Michaud said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
White was wearing a helmet, and investigators are looking into whether alcohol was involved, Michaud said.
There have been four snowmobile fatalities in Maine this winter.
