Marble powers Huskies USM earns spot in Little East final

GORHAM – Ashley Marble had 17 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the University of Southern Maine women’s basketball team to a 65-40 win over Keene State College in the Little East Conference semifinals Friday.

USM will face Eastern Connecticut State for the conference title today at 4 p.m.

Donna Cowing had 13 points and six steals for the Huskies as Megan Myles added eight points and five steals. Katie Frost had 10 assists with her eight points.

Bri Barnes paced Keene State with 14 points and Sarah Begnoche scored 13 points.

At Castine, Michelle Gott scored 17 points to help push Maine Maritime Academy past Castleton State to advance to the North Atlantic Conference Championship against the UMaine-Farmington.

Julia Knights had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Mariners and Caitlyn Grant had six assists.

Mary Nienow scored 15 points for the Spartans.

At Castine, Kari Simpson scored 41 points and had three steals to push the Beavers Farmington past Lasell to advance to the North Atlantic Conference Championship against Maine Maritime.

Melissa Sawyer scored 13 points for UMF and Karen Sirois had eight points and six steals.

Theresa Allen led Lasell with 22 points.

At Oxford, Miss., Mark Wright hit a two-run home run in the first inning to help lead Mississippi past the University of Maine.

Evan Button had two singles and three RBIs for the Rebels as Justin Henry and Justin Brashear both had two singles and two RBIs.

Danny Menandez doubled and singled for the Black Bears. Joel Barrett doubled and scored on a Ryan Quintal single in the second. Quintal later scored on a Curt Smith double.

Softball

Maine wins two

At Chattanooga, Tenn., senior Brittany Cheney drove in four runs on three hits including a home run to help lead the University of Maine past Belmont in the opening game 12-9. The Black Bears also defeated East Tennessee State 6-4.

In the first game, Kristie Hawkins had two hits and scored twice for 2-0 Maine. Sarah Bennis struck out seven in a complete game effort.

In the second game, Amy Kuhl paced the Black Bears with three hits and driving in two runs. Molly McKinney had two hits and had two RBIs for and Cheney went two-for-four with an RBI.

Jenna Balent struck out eight, walked one, and allowed just two earned runs through seven innings.

Men’s basketball

UM-Farmington 78, Husson 71

At Bangor, Travis Carrier scored 26 points and had 11 rebounds to help lead the University of Maine at Farmington to upset Husson College and advance to the North Atlantic Conference Champion to play Elms College.

Matt St. John scored 16 points for the Beavers and Sean Fry added 13 points. Travis Magnusson had 11 points, seven assists, and four steals.

Jason Harvey paced Husson with 17 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Buddy Leavitt had 16 points and eight rebounds and Phil White scored 14 points. Tyler Muzzy had 11 points and Jordan Heath added nine points.
