STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Rashard Turner scored a career-high 25 points and Ernest Turner added 19 to lead Maine to an 87-75 win Sunday over Stony Brook University, which has lost eight straight.
Maine ends its regular season with a three-game win streak and secures the seventh spot in the America East playoff bracket. The Black Bears (12-15, 7-9 in America East) will take on tourney host and No. 2 seed Binghamton (15-12, 12-4) University Saturday at noon in Vestal, N.Y.
Maine shot 50 percent in the game and 65.2 percent (15-for-23) from three-point range. Maine finished one 3-point field goal shy of tying the school record for 3-pointers in a game.
The Turners made four 3’s each, along with Freddy Petkus, who finished with 15 points. John Sheets added 11 points and three 3’s for the Black Bears, who finished one shy of the school record. Olli Ahvenniemi (Vaasa, Finland) finished with a team-high seven rebounds and two blocks.
Maine held Stony Brook scoreless from the 13:19 mark until Bobby Santiago hit a three-point field goal with 7:44 remaining in the first half to snap the drought for the Seawolves.
Mitchell Beauford had 17 points and Antwan Hardy had 15 for the Seawolves (4-23, 2-14), who trailed 45-28 at halftime.
The Back Bears built a 27-11 lead at 7:49 in the first half. Maine then went on a 16-8 run to extend the lead.
Maine continued to add to its lead via 3-point field goals. The Bears shot 70.6 percent (12 of 17) from behind the arc in the half.
The Seawolves cut Maine’s lead to 10 points, 67-57, when Hardy hit a layup with 4:20 remaining in the game. Rashard Turner had a fast break layup and Ernest Turner drained a three-point field goal to push Maine’s lead back to 72-59. With the three by Petkus, Maine was just one three-point field goal shy of tying the school record for three-point field goals in a game of 16.
