USM claims 10th straight LEC title

GORHAM – Megan Myles scored 21 points Saturday to lead top-ranked University of Southern Maine past No. 3 Eastern Connecticut State 71-55 in the Little East Conference championship game.

The Huskies, who won their 10th straight LEC title, have advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament and likely will be a first-round host. The pairings will be announced this morning.

Ashley Marble had 17 points and four assists for the Huskies and Shannon Kynoch added 12 points and three steals.

Sandy Mosley paced the Warriors with 14 points and Kathy Shaw had 12.

At Lewiston, sophomore Marisa Berne scored 18 points Sunday to push Bowdoin College of Brunswick past Bates to claim its sixth straight NESCAC championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Bowdoin defeated Wesleyan 61-46 in Saturday’s semifinals.

Julia Loonin scored all of her 17 points in the second half for the Polar Bears and Justine Pouravelis had 11 rebounds with her 10 points. Eileen Flaherty scored 14 points.

Sarah Barton paced Bates with 15 points and seven assists and Meg Coffin had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

At Lyndonville, Vt., Nicole Corbin tossed in 25 points, including five 3-pointers, Sunday to lead the Bengals into the Sunrise Conference title game.

Top-seeded UMaine-Fort Kent faces No. 2 Lyndon State, a 73-64 winner over No. 3 College of St. Joseph, in today’s championship.

April Allen netted 16 points and provided six assists and five steals for UMFK. Dana Lemon added 11 points and six assists.

Angela Qualey scored 22 points, including 11 free throws, for UMaine-Machias. Sara Wells scored 12 points and Alyssa Larochelle added 11 points. Ashten Smith chipped in with eight points and 15 rebounds.

Saint Joseph’s wins title

At Standish, Megan Farrell scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Saint Joseph’s College past the University of Maine-Presque Isle to claim the Division III Independents Northeast Regional Championship on Sunday.

The Monks had defeated Saint Joseph’s of Brooklyn 64-62 on Saturday.

Alysn Ludwig had 13 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for the Monks. Tournament MVP Danielle Somma scored 15 points and All-Tournament selection Kaylin Regula had 13 rebounds and seven assists.

Sarah Beasley paced the Owls with 11 points and five assists and Johanna Bubar had nine points.

UM-Presque Isle teammates Beasley and Jessica Cyr were selected to the All-Tournament team.

At Bangor Saturday, Elms College won its second straight North Atlantic Conference championship behind a balanced scoring effort that produced five double-digit scorers.

NAC Tournament MVP David Williams led the way with 34 points and seven rebounds. All-tourney pick Justin Davis had 10 points while Antoine Holder and John Ancrum each scored 11. Malakie Berry finished with 10 points and six boards.

The UMF Beavers were led by all-tourney picks Travis Carrier of Auburn (20 points and nine rebounds) and Travis Magnusson of Thomaston (11 points, seven assists). Sophomores Isaac Hutchinson of Oakland, Matt St. John of Wayne, and Sean Fry of Jay finished with 18, 15, and 14 points, respectively.

The other members of the NAC all-tourney team were Husson College junior Jason Harvey of Bucksport and Lesley College’s Michael Lush.
