3 vie for selectman seat in Penobscot election

PENOBSCOT – There are two contested races in the municipal elections at the annual town meeting this year.

Incumbent Selectman Bing Gross will face challengers Glen Ashe and Peter Colman for the three-year term as selectman.

There are four candidates for two seats on the school committee. In the race for a three-year term on the board, incumbent Gerald Markley will be challenged by Karerie Prescott.

The race for a one-year term on the committee will see incumbent Larry Martel challenged by Christine Harmon. Martel was appointed last year to fill a vacant seat on the school committee until this election.

The municipal budget presents no major changes for voters, according to Gross. The account for the operation of the transfer station will increase by about $3,000, but that increase will be offset by reductions in other accounts, he said.

The warrant includes an article asking voters to approve expenditures over the state imposed limits, but Gross said he does not anticipate it will be needed. Although there will likely be a $1,000 addition to the budget to fund the town historical society, the overall budget will decrease by more than $3,000, Gross said.

No funds for the historical society were included in the budget because the request for funding was not received before the budget meeting, he said.

The polls will be open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday at the elementary school. Discussion of the remaining municipal articles will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the school.

Discussion of the school items on the budget will be held Tuesday, March 14, at the school.
