Champs: ‘Cats, Maranacook Bardaglio sparks Bears

BANGOR – The Mountain Valley boys basketball team held Maranacook of Readfield star Ryan Martin 13 points under his tournament scoring average at the Bangor Auditorium on Friday night.

But the Rumford-based Falcons had no answer for another Black Bear sophomore, as Will Bardaglio made six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points to lead Maranacook to a 73-58 victory and the first Class B state championship in school history.

Martin added 21 points for the Black Bears, who became the sixth consecutive Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference team to win the gold ball in Class B.

Collectively, Maranacook shot 55.5 percent (25 of 45) from the field, 53 percent (8 of 15) from 3-point land.

“They just shot the lights out,” said Mountain Valley coach Dave Gerrish. “I was hoping at some point at time they’d miss some shots, but it really didn’t happen. They shot great, give them all the credit in the world.”

While Mountain Valley freshman Justin Staires did his best to stay with the explosive Martin, who had scored 102 points in three Eastern Maine tournament games, Bardaglio in particular made the previously undefeated Falcons pay.

The 6-foot-2 forward hit 8 of 13 shots overall, 6 of 10 from beyond the arc.

“In warm-ups I don’t think I made one shot,” said Bardaglio, “but in the game it just somehow turned around.

“We knew they were going to key on Ryan because of his two previous games, and we all stepped up and made open shots. It was a team effort.”

Martin bided his time for his offense, scoring 15 points after intermission and eight in the fourth quarter as the 20-1 Black Bears gradually pulled away. On the night, the 5-8 guard made 6 of 9 shots from the field and all eight of his free throws to go with three assists.

“I tried to use the screens and use my speed to get open or get into gaps,” said Martin. “Once Will started hitting I just had to keep getting him the ball.”

Junior forward Andy Shorey led 20-1 Mountain Valley with 21 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Marcus Palmer added 15 points and Staires scored 12, eight in the first quarter to help Mountain Valley stay within 18-14.

Maranacook moved out to a 28-19 lead on a 3-pointer by Jimmy Palmer midway through the second quarter, but a 3-pointer by Shorey capped an 11-2 run that rallied Mountain Valley to a 30-30 tie with 1:44 left in the period.

Maranacook held a 34-32 lead at the break, but it was really at more of a standstill at that point. Each team shot 14 of 26 from the field over the first two periods, and Maranacook had seven turnovers compared to six for Mountain Valley.

Shorey took a lob feed from frontcourt mate Travis Fergola and converted a three-point play to give Mountain Valley its first lead, 37-34 with 5:15 left in the third quarter.

But Bardaglio finally gave Maranacook the lead for good, working inside to convert a three-point play for a 42-41 Black Bears’ lead with 2:15 left in the period.

Then Maranacook, which shot just two free throws in the first half, began converting from the line as Mountain Valley found itself with seven team fouls midway through the third quarter.

Martin and Kevin Leary each hit two in the final minute of the period to extend Maranacook’s lead to 49-44.

Bardaglio then made two 3-pointers as Maranacook scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 56-44.

Mountain Valley had one last serious rally, as Byron Glaus went inside for a basket and D.J. Gerrish added a transition jumper to cut the gap to 56-48.

But Maranacook scored the next eight points, as Bryce Spaulding scored on a feed from point guard Mike Poulin, Jimmy Palmer scored on an offensive rebound and Martin hit a lane jumper and two free throws to make it 64-48 with 2:59 left.
