ORONO – The University of Maine Black Bears will host a Hockey East quarterfinal series next weekend but they lost a valuable point Friday night.
UMass junior left wing Chris Capraro’s power-play goal with 2:58 remaining in regulation gave the Minutemen a 2-2 tie in overtime with the Black Bears at Alfond Arena.
Maine is now 23-10-2 overall, 16-8-2 in Hockey East. UMass is 13-18-2, 10-14-2.
Maine extended its unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2) but had its four-game winning streak snapped.
The teams will conclude their series on tonight at 7.
Maine outshot the Minutemen 50-24 but freshman goalie Jon Quick was exceptional and his teammates did an efficient job limiting the number of second shots he had to face.
“I didn’t expect to see that many shots,” said Quick. “I usually see 30 or so. The defense played real well. They kept the shots to the perimeter. Any time you can come up here and get a point, you’ve got to be proud of your effort.”
UMass is now 3-2-1 in its last six games at Alfond Arena.
“It’s frustrating to get 50 shots on goal, with just one power play, and not win the game,” said Maine senior center Derek Damon.
Maine senior defenseman Steve Mullin said Quick played “really well and helped them stay in the game until they could tie it. They didn’t give us many quality second shots.”
The Black Bears took a 2-1 lead into the third period and had plenty of chances to add an insurance goal but Quick came up with several important stops.
Maine’s Michel Leveille was whistled for goaltender interference with 3:59 remaining, just the fourth penalty of the game up to that point, and the Minutemen capitalized.
“I was trying to cut in front,” said Leveille, who had gotten around a Minuteman defenseman with the puck.
On the power play, UMass kept the Bears penned in their own end and buzzed the net.
Mark Matheson fed the puck to Marvin Degon at the point.
Degon one-timed a blast that was kicked out by Maine goalie Ben Bishop.
But the rebound glanced over to Capraro in the left circle and he fired it past Bishop.
“It came right out to me slowly and I put it in. I was trying to put the puck upstairs,” said Capraro
Bishop said, “I never saw the first shot. I was lucky I made that save. The rebound beat me short side. He made a good shot. I almost got it.”
After a scoreless first period, Maine’s Bret Tyler and Jon Jankus sandwiched goals around one by Capraro. The three goals came in a span of 2:39.
Tyler had opened the scoring at the 12:24 mark but Capraro scored just 2:11 later. Jankus broke the tie 28 seconds after Capraro’s goal.
Tyler’s sixth goal of the season came off a Rob Bellamy feed that finished off a three-on-two.
Bellamy fired the puck across the net front from the base of the right circle and Tyler jammed it past Quick.
Capraro drew the Minutemen level by scoring during a scramble that he initiated with a wraparound attempt.
“I took three or four whacks at it,” said Capraro.
Jankus broke the tie with a quick wrister from the right circle right after he faked a shot. He beat Quick short side.
“I tried to push off with my right leg but I slipped,” said Quick.
Damon had a great chance in overtime as he cut around a defenseman and got off a shot from just beyond the crease. But Quick got his left shoulder on the shot, the puck popped in the air and landed on top of the net.
UMass’ Cory Quirk had a glorious chance to win it in the final seconds of overtime but Bishop came out to smother his open slapper from the left circle.
