Huskies cruise by Mariners Bowdoin advances; UMF eliminated

GORHAM – Ashley Marble tallied a game-high 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the University of Southern Maine women’s basketball team earned an 81-41 over Maine Maritime Academy in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Katie Sibley, Megan Myles, and Shannon Kynoch each chipped in with nine points for the Huskies.

Alyssa Burns scored 18 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Mariners of Castine. Meghan Marshall added 11 points.

At Brunswick, Eileen Flaherty poured in 23 points and pulled down six rebounds as the Polar Bears rolled in an NCAA Division III first-round game.

Justine Pouravelis contributed 16 points, six assists and five steals for Bowdoin, while Julia Loonin scored 14 and Jill Anelauskas added 12 points and four steals.

Stacey Hildreth had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Colby-Sawyer.

At Gorham, Sarah Chap tallied 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Norwich by UMF.

Kayleigh Shappy chipped in with 15 points, including four 3-pointers, while Allison Flynn added 14 points for the winners. Monica Selander scored 10.

Kari Simpson netted a game-high 23 points to pace the Beavers while Karen Sirois had 15 points and Melissa Sawyer tossed in 12.

At Newburgh, N.Y., Shannon Scales scored back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 34 seconds of overtime to lift Bridgewater College by Bates in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Scales poked away a Sarah Barton inbounds pass to get the ball and score the winning 3-pointer with 16 seconds left. Marsha Kinder led Bridgewater with 26 points.

Matia Kostakis paced the Bobcats with 22 points while Meg Coffin scored 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.
