UMaine’s Turner, Ahvenniemi, Bofia garner league honors

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Senior guard Ernest Turner of the University of Maine was named to the All-America East men’s basketball second team Friday.

Turner, a Camden, N.J., native who transferred to Maine from Nevada-Las Vegas, led the Black Bears in scoring in 14 of 27 games this year, and averaged a team-leading 15.2 points per game.

Turner was one of three Maine players to earn conference honors. Olli Ahvenniemi, a 6-10 junior center-forward from Vaasa, Finland, was named to the conference’s inaugural all-defensive team after averaging a team-leading 8.2 rebounds per game and leading America East with 2.59 blocked shots per contest.

Philippe Tchekane Bofia, a 6-6 freshman forward from Yaounde, Cameroon, was selected to the all-rookie team. Bofia led the Black Bears by shooting 46.4 percent from the field, and ranked second on the team with an average of 5.4 rebounds per contest.

University of Albany guard Jamar Wilson was named the America East player of the year. He was joined on the AE first team by Andre Heard of Binghamton, Kevin Gardner of Boston University, Kenny Adeleke of Hartford and Blagoj Janev of New Hampshire.

Mike Tromboli, a 6-1 guard from Vermont, was named the league’s rookie of the year, while Sebastian Hermenier of Binghamton was chosen defensive player of the year. Larry Harrison of Hartford was named the conference’s coach of the year.
