BOSTON – John Wiechman of Bonny Eagle High in Standish was the top Maine finisher over the weekend at the New England Interscholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships, winning the boys shot put.

Wiechman, the reigning Fitzpatrick Trophy winner as the state’s top senior high school football player, won the shot with a best effort of 57 feet, 9 inches.

Other top Maine performers in the boys meet were Devin Belanger of Biddeford, second in the 55 hurdles; William Fedus of Winslow, fourth in the 600; and David Thomas of Sumner of East Sullivan, ninth in the high jump.

In the girls meet, Abby Iselborn of McAuley of Portland placed third in the 2-mile and seventh in the mile, while Becky O’Brien of Greely of Cumberland Center placed second in the shot put.

Hilary Maxim, a sophomore from Old Town, finished ninth in the mile.
