SWANS ISLAND – Residents chose a new selectman and voted to add a medical clinic to the town office at Monday night’s annual town meeting
The new clinic will be built with the $500,000 sum that was authorized by the town, selectman Dexter Lee said Tuesday afternoon.
“The doctors in the area said that this would be an awful good time to have an enlarged medical clinic,” he said. “It will involve putting a second floor on the existing town office.”
The town also revised a camping ordinance, which will now allow Swans Island youth groups to camp at the Mill Pond Park and the Everett Kent ball field. Camping previously had been prohibited on town property.
In a disputed race, Carroll Staples was voted to be a new selectman, receiving 56 votes to Emmie Joyce’s 45.
For the planning board,
. Carol Loehr was elected, receiving 43 votes to Gary Rainford’s 38.
. Incumbent Seth Joy was re-elected to a two-year term on the planning board.
. Incumbent John Follis was re-elected to serve a three-year term.
In other business:
. Town clerk Gwen May was re-elected to a three-year term.
. Tammy Tripler and Myron Sprague Jr. were re-elected to three-year school board terms.
. The town voted to acquire three abandoned cemeteries.
