BOCA RATON, Fla. – Marc Weres hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Monmouth Hawks to a 6-3 baseball victory over the University of Maine on Wednesday.
Maine opened the scoring in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Curt Smith that plated Joe Hough.
Monmouth tied the game in the bottom of the second when Weres scored on an error.
Maine took the lead back in the third. Hough walked and scored when Matt McGraw grounded out to third base. The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on Andy Meyers’ solo home run.
Monmouth took its first lead in the eighth. Nick Massari tripled down the right field line and scored on Patrick Sullivan’s bunt single.
The Black Bears tied the game in the top of the ninth. Bobby Brown led off with a single to right, went to third on Kevin McAvoy’s infield single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Danny Menendez.
Maine starter Josh Zyskowski pitched 7 1/3 innings and scattered eight hits and three runs, two of which were earned, while striking out seven.
Jason Weymouth and John Tesseyman each pitched a scoreless one-third of an inning before A.J. Balsinde came on in the ninth and absorbed the loss.
Hough led Maine at the plate as he had two singles with two runs scored. McGraw posted three singles with a run scored, and Joel Barrett chipped in with two singles.

At Tampa, Fla., Tom Fien belted a three-run homer and freshman Bill Davis scattered 10 hits as Widener nipped the Eagles for its fourth straight win.
Davis struck out one and walked two in going the distance.
Matt Fischer singled home a first-inning run for the winners and Fien homered in the second as they built a 4-1 lead.
Jason Harvey had a triple and two singles and drove in two runs for Husson. Andrew Patterson and Danny White each singled twice.
Patterson had an RBI.
Freshman Chad Lavway pitched six innings in his college debut. He struck out eight and walked one. He also hit four batters. Keith Nason pitched three shutout innings.

At Sioux City, Iowa, Karah Walton scored 15 points to help lead top-seeded Cedarville University past the University of Maine at Fort Kent in the first round of the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship.
Emily Delimpo scored 11 points for Cedarville and Brittany Smart added 10 points.
Traci Weatherhead paced the Bengals with 12 points, and Nicole Corbin scored 10. Dana Lemon had nine points and four steals.
