Orono man accused of assaults

An Orono man was issued two summonses for assault after kicking a Bangor police officer and hitting a nurse at Eastern Maine Medical Center on Tuesday night.

Police responded to a call at EMMC around 10 p.m. where Charles Gardner, 45, of Orono was being cared for in the emergency room.

Gardner was intoxicated and appeared confused, according to police reports. He was using “threatening language towards the nurse.” More nurses, two police officers and an EMMC security guard assisted in restraining Gardner.

Gardner purposely kicked at Detective John Robinson and struck him on the left arm when Robinson raised his arm to protect his face. Gardner also hit a nurse in the face with the back of his hand.

Gardner was issued summonses for assaulting the detective and the nurse.

A Bangor man was arrested for operating under the influence of intoxicants Tuesday night after being stopped on Court Street.

Bangor Police Officer Josh Ouellette responded to a call of an erratic vehicle at 10:45 p.m. He located the vehicle on Court Street and pulled him over.

When the officer walked up to the car the driver, later identified as David Sowers, 31, of Bangor, appeared to be intoxicated but denied drinking anything that night.

Sowers was put through field sobriety tests and failed them. He was then brought to the Bangor Police Department for an Intoxilyzer test. His blood alcohol level was 0.17.

Sowers was issued a summons for operating under the influence of intoxicants and was released but couldn’t get his car back until the next day.
