MCDONALD'S ALL-STAR BASKETBALL

Senior games act as Bouchard’s playoff Banquet tips off weekend all-star event

OLD TOWN – Logan Bouchard will be hard-pressed to match his most recent high school basketball performance when he suits up for the East A-B boys squad in Saturday’s 26th annual Maine McDonald’s East-West Senior All-Star Games.

The four-game schedule at Newman Gymnasium on the campus of Husson College kicks off at 9 a.m. with the girls A/B contest, followed by girls C/D at 10:45 a.m., boys A/B at 12:30 p.m. and boys C/D at 2 p.m.

McDonald’s weekend activities begin Friday with team practices, a visit to the Ronald McDonald’s House of Bangor, and the annual all-star banquet set to begin at 7 p.m. in Newman Gymnasium.

Highlighting the banquet will be the naming of the 2006 Mr. and Miss Maine Basketball. Mr. Maine Basketball finalists are Bryant Barr of Falmouth, Jordan Cook of Hampden Academy and Sean Costigan of Cheverus of Portland. Miss Maine Basketball finalists are Samantha Allen of Lake Region of Naples, Katie Delong of Presque Isle and Kayla Parker of Sanford.

Bouchard, a 6-foot-1 guard, capped off his senior season at Old Town High by scoring a career-high 42 points against Hampden Academy, the two-time reigning Eastern Maine Class A champions.

“I knew it was my last game,” said Bouchard, “We weren’t going to make the playoffs, and it was the last game of my senior year, so I just went out and played as hard as I could.”

Bouchard scored in every conceivable fashion that night, including six 3-point goals and 12 free throws. He scored 28 points in the second half as Old Town earned the 71-59 upset victory.

“It was just a great individual performance,” said Old Town coach Marty Clark. “He was just on fire and carried us to that victory. Not only did he have 42 points, but he had six or seven rebounds, four or five steals, four or five assists. He was just very focused, and everybody played awfully hard that night.”

The performance marked Bouchard’s second 40-point outburst of the season. He scored 41 points – including a 7-of-11 performance from 3-point land – during a Jan. 24 win at Skowhegan.

“He’s as athletic a player as I’ve ever coached,” said Old Town coach Marty Clark.

And that’s tall praise coming from someone who’s coached the likes of 1993 Mr. Maine Basketball Matt Arsenault, Corey Thibodeau, Steve Pooler, John L’Heureux and Casey Costigan during his 17 years on the sidelines at Old Town.

“[Logan’s] got great jumping ability, he can stand and dunk the ball, he’s got a quick first step, he’s just a great athlete,” Clark said.

Part of that athleticism stems from Bouchard playing basketball virtually every day – for his high school team, in the AAU ranks, or pickup games at the University of Maine field house or the Old Town-Orono YMCA.

Bouchard also added 25 pounds to his frame between his junior and senior seasons, bringing him to a solid 190 pounds.

“It’s made a real difference in everything this year,” he said.

Despite Old Town’s 4-14 record – which included a series of narrow losses – Bouchard was nominated for the McDonald’s All-American Team and named to the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference North Division second team.

He hopes to continue his basketball career in prep school or junior college next year, but in the meantime is happy that the McDonald’s all-star game offers one last chance to test his skills against the rest of the state’s top large-school players.

“I’m just going to go out and have some fun,” he said.
