Warren man killed in Route 131 accident

WARREN – A 25-year-old man was killed Thursday evening in a two-vehicle accident on Route 131, three miles south of the Union town line.

Michael Jones of Warren died at the scene around 5 p.m. on Eastern Road.

The accident, which still is being reconstructed by Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy Thomas Welch, involved a 2003 Ford van, owned by Beacon Family Living Inc. of Warren and a 2001 Ford Explorer owned by David Philips of Union.

Snow- and slush-covered road conditions and unsafe speed have been determined to be factors in the accident, according to a press release from sheriff’s Chief Deputy Todd Butler. The report stated no charges are pending, but did not indicate if seat belts were worn.

Daniel P. Maresh, 20, of Rockport was driving the van south on Route 131 when he lost control of the vehicle and went into the northbound lane, colliding with the SUV being operated by Carole Philips, 51, of Union.

Jones was a passenger in the van, along with John Powers, 61, of Warren, Kari Raymond, 25, of Searsport, and William Viles, 24, of Warren.

Maresh and all his passengers were taken by ambulance to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Philips was taken to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.

Philips was treated and then released, according to a Miles spokeswoman on Friday.

At PBMC, Powers, Raymond and Viles were treated and then transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, and Maresh was treated and then released, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Powers, Raymond and Viles were all listed in fair condition, according to a nursing supervisor at EMMC.

Warren, Waldoboro and Thomaston ambulance departments responded, as well as the Warren Fire Department.

Sheriff’s Deputies Patrick Fosnaught and James Butler and Maine State Trooper Terry Michaud assisted.
