Maine rallies in ninth, tips FIU Quintal, McAvoy lead Black Bears

MIAMI – Maine scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth and reliever Scott Robinson struck out Florida International University’s Cody Jacobs with a runner on third in the bottom of the inning to give the Black Bears a 9-8 baseball victory Tuesday night.

MIAMI – Maine scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth and reliever Scott Robinson struck out Florida International University’s Cody Jacobs with a runner on third in the bottom of the inning to give the Black Bears a 9-8 baseball victory Tuesday night.

Danny Menendez doubled to lead off the Maine ninth and was sacrificed to third by Sean Parker. After an intentional walk to Joe Hough, Menendez scored when Matt McGraw reached on an error by shortstop Alex Alfonso.

Senior righthander Robinson earned his second win after blowing a save opportunity as he came on in the seventh for junior righty Josh Zyskowski with Maine leading 6-3. Zyskowski turned in a solid outing as he gave up three hits, walked four and struck out six.

Ryan Quintal doubled and singled to drive in two runs for Maine and Kevin McAvoy added two singles and two RBIs. Joel Barrett chipped in with three singles and an RBI, Curt Smith singled, doubled, and tripled, and Parker had three singles.

The Bears scored four runs in the first on an RBI single by Barrett and a run-producing double from Quintal. McAvoy also drove a two-run single up the middle.

Maine received two gift runs in the next inning, the first coming on a balk and the second on a passed ball.

Quintal added an RBI single in the eighth and another run came across when Bobby Brown drew a bases-loaded walk.

Cody Jacobs paced FIU with a double, single, and two RBIs and Bryan Pullin chipped in with a double, single, and RBI.

At Port Richey, Fla., Brian Pernice and Dave Olson each hit a double and two singles to knock in two runs and lead Gettysburg past Saint Joseph’s College of Standish.

Chase Straub hit a two-run homer for Gettysburg, and Mark Campo singled twice and scored a run.

Brian Schools doubled and singled to pace the Monks. Dustin Spiller hit two singles and scored two runs, and Mark Clapp added two singles.

Maine splits

At Orlando, Fla., the University of Maine shut out Columbia 3-0 in their first game, but Tennessee-Martin defeated the Bears 4-0 in the second.

In the first game, Amy Kuhl hit a two-run double in the first inning to lead the Black Bears. Sarah Bennis improved to 9-1 by giving up four hits, no runs, and striking out a season-high 10 batters.

In the second game, Erin Provost doubled for Maine and Jenna Balent took the loss, allowing four runs and striking out three.

Saint Joseph’s splits

At Fort Myers, Fla., Gabrielle Burrola allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out nine to lead Saint Joseph’s College to a 9-0 shutout of Norwich (Vt.) University in the second game of the day. Fitchburg (Mass.) State defeated the Monks 8-3 in the opening game.

In the first game, Keri Kravetz tripled, doubled, singled, and scored twice for Fitchburg and Jessie Krause had a triple and a single.

Kristi Albert hit three singles and scored a run for Saint Joseph’s and Burrola singled twice and drove in two runs.

In the second game, Kim Bechard doubled to knock in two runs for the Monks and Amanda Roy had two RBIs.

Codi Collins singled to produce Norwich’s lone hit.
