All-Star swimmers
Several area YMCA swim teams competed in the fourth annual YMCA All-Star meet held on Feb. 18 at Bates College in Lewiston. Swimmers were selected for the All-Star team based on their performances throughout the winter season.
The top two swimmers in each event in four age groups – 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15 and over – were selected to compete in three divisions: northern, central, and southern teams. The northern team, participants from the Old Town-Orono Y Canoe City Swim Club, Piscataquis Region Y, Mount Desert Island Y and Downeast Family Y, won the boys and combined team championship.
Old Town-Orono YMCA’s Canoe City Swim Club All-Stars included: (9-10) Adrianna Beauchamp, Yuval Boss, John Peterson; (11-12) Mariah Reading, Chellie Oldfield, Carson Foley, Cameron Dwyer; (13-14) Lauren Dwyer, Kate Buteel, Monica Alexander, Tim Blair, Seth Oldfield; (15 and over) Erin Thomas, Yanghee Kwon, Kate Foley, Alicia Laflamme, Chloe Meisner and Jacob Shanley. Robbie Bickford also was selected but unable to participate.
Swimmers winning individual events: Mariah Reading (50 fly; 100 IM, meet record); Lauren Dwyer (100 breast stroke, meet record; 100 back, meet record and National YMCA qualifying standard); Erin Thomas (50 free, meet record; 200 free, meet record); Yanghee Kwon (100 Fly); Carson Foley (200 free); John Peterson (100 IM); Cameron Dwyer (50 fly); and Yuval Boss (100 free).
Canoe City Swim Club also sent five swimmers to the Maine Swimming 8 and under Championship held in Cape Elizabeth Feb. 26-27. Participants competed in seven individual events – 100 free, 25 breast, 25 back, 25 fly, 25 free, 50 free and 100 IM – over two days. The boys team and the combined team of Liam Reading, Eli Beauchamp, Lucas Beauchamp, Aiesha Sargent and Hannah Wood won the second place team trophy. Eli Beuachamp won the fifth place trophy. Winning all seven events, Liam Reading was the overall boys champion. Canoe City coaches are two-time Olympic gold medalist Matt Vogel and Brenda Oldfield.
Red Sox trips
BANGOR – Join the Bangor Y for a trip to Fenway Park in Boston to see the Red Sox, the 2004 World Champions. See the Sox play the Seattle Mariners at 11:05 a.m. Monday, April 17, or see them play the Texas Rangers at 2:05 p.m. Sunday, May 14.
Chaperones are available for children 10 years old and older. Both trips include tickets, transportation, snacks, refreshments and prizes. The cost is $100. Register at the Bangor Y. Call 941-2815.
Youth Bowling Program
OLD TOWN – The Old Town Parks and Recreation Program is accepting registration for its Youth Bowling Program held at Old Town Bowling Lanes. The program is for children in grades kindergarten to six who want to enjoy bowling while improving their game, learning rules and scorekeeping, and socializing. Parents are encouraged to help with lane management and scorekeeping.
The program will run 5-6 p.m. for six weeks beginning Tuesday, March 28. The cost for the program is $25 for Old Town residents and $40 for others. Call 827-3961 for more information or to register.
