TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Maine softball team finished 1-2 on the weekend after taking part in the Speedline Invitational.

The Black Bears began Saturday with a 2-0 loss to Elon, but rebounded to beat Dartmouth 5-1. Maine finished with a 7-1 loss to Winthrop on Sunday and completed its spring trip with a 16-11 record.

In Saturday’s first game, Maine’s Jenna Balent pitched all seven innings striking out four, walking just one and giving up both runs on five hits.

In the second game, Erin Provost led Maine with three runs scored. Brittany Cheney drove in a pair of runs while Molly McKinney had the other RBI. Sarah Bennis pitched seven innings, striking out eight and allowing one run on three hits.

In Sunday’s game, Erin Provost drove in Maine’s only run. Kristie Hawkins, Dana Grimm and Tara Vilardo each had a hit.

St. Joseph’s loses two

At Cape Coral, Fla., Cardinal Stritch beat St. Joseph’s of Standish 4-0 in the first game Saturday and the College of Wooster handed the Monks a 5-0 loss in the second game.

In the first game, Gabrielle Burrola and Megan Farrell had the only two hits for the Monks, a single each. Colleen Delahanty struck out four in six innings.

In the second game, Deb Brown singled twice to lead St. Joseph’s. Burrola had eight strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Columbia 10, Maine 7

At Boca Raton, Fla., Columbia edged the Bears as they ended their spring trip with a 9-8 record.

Ryan Quintal hit three singles and drove in a run as to lead Maine.

Joel Barrett chipped in with two singles and an RBI while Kevin McAvoy added an RBI double. Billy Cather and Curt Smith each singled for an RBI.

Pat Moran pitched four innings for Maine and allowed five runs on eight hits. Will Carroll allowed two runs on three hits. Mitch Clegg went two innings allowing two runs on four hits and A.J. Balsinde pitched the final three innings, allowing one run on three hits.

Thomas splits doubleheader

At Providence, R.I., on Sunday, Jordan McDonald posted a double and two singles to lead Thomas by Rhode Island College 9-5 and earn a split of their doubleheader.

Rhode Island College won the opener 13-2.

In the first game, Matt Pavlis had two singles for the Terriers of Waterville, while Tim Mercier and Brandon Connors each drove in a run.

In the second game, Jerry Randall had three singles and an RBI for Thomas. Ryan Rulman held off the Anchormen, allowing five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
