Brewer Peewee hockey team enjoys tourney

BREWER – The Brewer Quirk Auto House Peewee Hockey Team competed March 10-12 the Delta Marc Break Tournament in Saint John, New Brunswick. The Brewer team finished second in its division with a 2-0-1 record.

The players followed that up with an exciting cross-over game that required eight 1-minute overtime periods before the opponent, the Moncton Hornets, beat Brewer.

Many Saint John hockey fans remarked that they had never seen such an exciting hockey game.

Game 1 was between the Brewer House Peewee team and the Moncton Cobras. Brewer jumped to a 5-2 lead. Scoring was by center Tyler Johnston, assisted by wing Ian Forrest; center Michael Curtis, assisted by wing Ben Crosthwaite and defenseman C.J. Burns; Curtis, assisted by Burns; Johnston; and center Joey Pate, assisted by defenseman Nick Moore.

But the Cobras scored on a power play in the third period, followed that with another quick goal and got another with less than a minute to go. The game ended in a 5-5 tie. The Brewer goalie was Jaron Leonard.

Tyler Johnston was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award for Brewer after the game.

After a scoreless first period in game 2 with the Moncton Gators, Brewer took control, beating the Gators 5-1.

Brewer scoring was provided by wing Ian Forrest, assisted by center Joey Pate; wing Ben Crosthwaite; Forrest, assisted by defensemen Nick Moore; Crosthwaite, assisted by defensemen C.J. Burns and wing Ben Walton; and Pate, assisted by Ryan Brochu.

The Most Valuable Player Award for the game went to goalie Jaron Leonard.

Game 3 against the Saint John Ice Hawks was a tight game, with much physical play. Brewer scored first with 2:21 left in the first period on a shot from the point by defenseman Josh McNally.

Saint John came back with a goal halfway through the second period. The game remained tied until the third period when, with 1:01 left on the clock, wing Ian Forrest scored on a pass from center TJ Johnston.

The Brewer goalie was Jaron Leonard, and the Most Valuable Player was Ian Forrest.

The cross-over game was played Sunday morning at Gorman Arena in Saint John. Brewer played the Moncton Hornets, with all of the regulation goals occurring in the first two periods.

Brewer scored one goal in the first by center Joey Pate on a pass by wing Ryan Brochu. A goal in the second period was scored by wing Ben Crosthwaite on a pass by defenseman T.J. Leighton. The game remained tied and went into overtime.

Brewer held out through 8 overtime minutes, in a format where teams play 5-on-5 for one minute, 4-on-4, 3-on-3, 2-on-2 and 1-on-1 each for one minute. Once the 1-on-1 was reached, the game continued in that format for nearly four minutes until the Moncton Hornets finally scored to win the game.

Brewer’s goalie, Jaron Leonard, made many outstanding saves. The Most Valuable Player for Brewer was Ben Crosthwaite.

Brewer players in the tournament were wing Tony Bischoff, wing Ryan Brochu, defenseman C.J. Burns, wing Ben Crosthwaite, center Michael Curtis, defenseman Jimmy Donnelly, wing Ian Forrest, wing Abby Homer, center Tyler Johnston, defenseman T.J. Leighton, goalie Jaron Leonard, defenseman Josh McNally, defenseman Nick Moore, center Joey Pate and wing Ben Walton. Coaches are Tom Leighton, Dave Walton, Scott Homer and Joe Brochu. Players unable to attend the tournament were Preston Crowell, Mitchell Dunn and Connor Prescott.
