Millinocket police were called to a Poplar Street residence late Wednesday night for a report of a disturbance, and the officers wound up briefly entangled with the man who allegedly was at the center of it.
Millinocket police Officer Steve Perreault and Sgt. Jerry Cox were called to the home shortly before 11 p.m. after a report that Kevin Drew Baker, 34, had assaulted his wife.
Baker became combative when Cox and Perreault tried to take him into custody and he started punching and kicking at the officers, according to a police report. Baker reportedly struck Cox twice, although the sergeant said Thursday he was not injured.
The police took Baker to the floor and used pepper spray when the man tried to get up, Cox said. They handcuffed Baker and took him to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor. Baker was charged with assault, assault of a police officer, and refusing to submit to arrest.
Bangor police officers searched a Curve Street apartment late Wednesday night and found contraband that led to the arrest of the man living there.
Jonathan Garland, 32, was out on bail and required to allow police to search him and his apartment. That is what Officers Eric Tourtelotte and David Bushey did about 10 p.m. Wednesday. Tourtelotte reported finding a bag of marijuana that appeared packaged for sale on the coffee table, as well as a 2-foot-tall bong, or water pipe, and other items nearby.
Two safes were opened, with one containing plastic bags, a digital scale, metal and glass marijuana pipe pieces as well as marijuana leaves, seeds and residue scattered inside. Another contained two prescription bottles, one of them containing alprazolam, a generic form of Xanax, and an anti-anxiety medication that Garland didn’t have a prescription for, according to police.
When Tourtelotte asked him how much he sold per week in drugs, Garland told the officer to talk to his attorney.
“I am not that stupid,” he added. “I know if I tell you how much I sell a week you will just use that against me.”
Tourtelotte charged Garland with violating condition of release and possession of a Schedule Z drug, and issued summonses for possession of a usable amount of marijuana and illegal sale and use of drug paraphernalia.
A New Hampshire man unfamiliar with the area was stopped in Veazie early Thursday morning for having a headlight out. That turned out to be the least of his problems.
Thomas McDonald, 19, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants and illegal transportation of liquor by a minor. The New Hampshire man, who is attending Husson College, told Veazie police Officer Michael Adams that he is unfamiliar with the area.
Adams stopped McDonald’s car on State Street about 2 a.m. because of the darkened headlight, but said he could smell alcohol coming from the motorist, even though McDonald claimed he’d had nothing to drink. After field sobriety tests, Adams arrested Garland and searched the car, discovering an open bottle of rum as well as a flask containing alcohol.
McDonald’s blood alcohol content registered 0.15 percent on the Intoxilyzer test, nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
