AUGUSTA – Gov. John Baldacci has appealed for calm during today’s funeral in South Paris for Sgt. Corey Dan and said full security will be provided.
Baldacci said Friday his office had received phone calls and e-mails expressing concern about the Westboro Baptist Church’s planned protest during Dan’s funeral services. The Kansas-based church has disrupted the funerals of soldiers in other states.
Baldacci said past activities of the church have been “offensive on many levels” and are contrary to Mainers’ values. He said he has spoken to Dan’s parents and assured them that the state will provide full protection during their time of grieving.
“At this very emotional time, I’m calling on citizens of Maine for calm, to trust that we are doing everything. Contingencies have been planned for, resources are being provided, and no stone is being left unturned,” said Baldacci.
The Westboro church said it plans to send delegates to the funeral to express its belief that American soldiers are being struck down by God as retribution for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality.
Baldacci said he directed state police to coordinate with local police to provide security at the funeral. He has also directed that the United States flag and Maine flags be flown at half-staff on Saturday.
Dan, a 22-year-old Oxford Hills graduate, was killed March 13 while he was serving with the 101st Airborne Division.
