OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Joel Barrett of Brewer singled home Joe Hough (single) with one out in the top of the seventh inning Sunday, lifting the University of Maine to a 3-2 baseball victory over New York Institute of Technology in the finale of a three-game series at Presidents Field.
The Black Bears split Saturday, winning the opener 3-1 and dropping the nightcap 7-1.
In Sunday’s game, junior righthander Josh Zyskowski pitched 7 1/3 innings of two-hit ball as the Black Bears (11-9) shut down the host Bears.
Jason Weymouth picked up the win with two-thirds of an inning of hitless relief, while Scott Robinson worked a hitless ninth to earn his third save. Robinson now needs one save to tie Mark Powers for UMaine’s career saves mark with 19.
Curt Smith led UMaine with three singles, while Barrett posted a double and a single with two RBIs and Danny Menendez a triple and a single.
Hough ignited the game-winning rally with a one-out single to left, then Menendez followed with a single, sending Hough to third. Barrett cashed in with an RBI single for the Black Bears, who stranded 11 baserunners in the game.
UMaine took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Hough drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a triple by Menendez.
New York Tech (7-8) took a 2-1 lead in the same inning on Kraig Binick’s run-scoring triple and an RBI groundout.
UMaine regained the lead in the seventh when Hough reached on an error and scored on Barrett’s double down the left-field line.
In Saturday’s opener, Sean Parker hit an RBI single in UMaine’s two-run fourth inning as the Black Bears took the lead for good.
Sophomore lefty Nolan Boike (3-0) scattered five hits through four innings before Mike Powers pitched a hitless inning and Robinson worked two scoreless innings to notch the save.
Parker also stroked a run-scoring single in the second for UMaine, which managed only four hits in the contest.
Allendi Peralta singled twice for New York Tech behind loser Joe Esposito (0-2), who allowed only four hits and two earned runs.
In Saturday’s second game, Chris Perez pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts as the hosts gained the split.
New York Tech erased a 1-0 deficit with a five-run uprising in the third off loser Troy Martin (2-4). Two hit batters and two errors helped open the door for the inning, which included RBI singles by Esposito and David Johnson.
Martin allowed six hits and hit three batters, but only one of the seven runs he surrendered was earned. UMaine committed five errors.
Kevin McAvoy had an RBI single while Menendez singled and scored for the Black Bears.

WPI sweeps UM-Farmington
At Worcester, Mass. on Saturday, Worcester Polytechnic Institute spoiled the University of Maine at Farmington’s season openers with a doubleheader sweep.
UMF jumped out to a 3-0 third inning lead in the opener on RBI singles by Jacob Turner and Pete McLaughlin and an RBI double by Dan Stefanilo, but WPI scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take control.
WPI put the second game away early, scoring four runs in the first inning and seven runs in the second to grab an 11-0 lead.

At Chandler, Ariz., Chris Spangler pitched seven scoreless innings to help the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater by the University of Southern Maine Saturday.
Mike D’Andrea hit a triple while Ryan Pike added a double. Nick Vardaro, Eddie Skeffington and Chris Burleson each had an RBI single for the Huskies.
Mike Jacobson had a triple and a double for the Warhawks. Ben Prather also had a double while Matt DeLong added a double.

Husson splits doubleheader
At Providence, R.I., Sean Brawn collected four RBIs off a double, a single and a home run to lead Husson College by Johnson and Wales University 17-8 in the second game Sunday.
Husson lost to Johnson and Wales 10-8 in the first game.
In the first game, Jason Harvey and Justin Spencer each hit a home run while Brawn added two singles for the Eagles. Spencer also had a single and three RBIs.
In the second game, Harvey hit a double and three singles while Spencer added four singles for Husson.
