Bates defeats UMF for fourth win Southern Maine baseball and softball teams split doubleheaders

LEWISTON – Benjamin Shwartz and Griffin Finan combined to allow three runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out six to lead Bates College past the University of Maine-Farmington 7-3 in college baseball action Tuesday.

Donovan Driscoll singled to drive in a run and scored twice for the Bobcats, and Brian Mahoney and Erik Hood each singled twice and scored a run.

Corey Provencher hit two singles and scored twice for the Beavers. Aaron Wolfe singled twice, and Brody Artes doubled to drive in a run.

Trinity Christian 19, Colby 9

At Fort Myers, Fla., Nick Richards singled six times to lead Trinity Christian past Colby College of Waterville.

Rob Emmons hit two doubles and two singles for Trinity Christian.

Tyler Hales doubled and singled and drove in two runs for Colby while Craig Cooper added two singles and two RBIs. John Murphy, Jon Vacca, and Steve Sandak each singled twice.

USM splits doubleheader

At Chandler, Ariz., junior lefthander Peter Bergeron pitched three innings of scoreless, one-hit relief and the University of Southern Maine Huskies rallied for four runs in the sixth inning for a 6-4 win over the Luther College Norse in the second game of a doubleheader.

Luther won the opener 16-8.

USM used three singles, two walks, an infield error, and a sacrifice fly by Nick Vardaro to score the four runs in the sixth inning of the second game.

In the first game, Kyle Schroeder went 4-for-4 with a home run and seven RBIs to lead Luther. Eddie Skeffington and Stefan Black each had solo home runs for USM.

Southern Maine, Colby split

At Fort Myers, Fla., Katie Mainville of the University of Southern Maine followed up Monday’s no-hitter with a one-hit gem, leading the Huskies to a 5-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against Colby.

The White Mules won the second game 2-1.

In the opener, Mainville surrendered only a third-inning single and wound up striking out 13 as USM of Gorham prevailed. She walked two.

Christen Lachappelle paced the Huskies with a double, two singles and an RBI. Katie Martell posted a doubled and a single with three RBIs, while Evon Hudspeth added a double and a single.

In Game 2, Randi Arsenault and Mollie Puskar stroked RBI singles in the fifth inning to lift Colby of Waterville to victory.

Kara Fagan singled twice for the Mules behind winning Lauren Olmsted, who struck out six.

Danica Martin, Lachapelle and Sabrina Mills had two singles apiece for USM.
