Co-founder of Maine’s Hell’s Angels, 63, dies

LEWISTON – Carlton “Bill” Spencer, a founding member of Maine’s first chapter of the Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club, died Tuesday of lung cancer. He was 63.

Spencer discovered his passion for motorcycles when he traveled to California in the 1960s. After a few years out West, he returned to New England with his beloved Harley-Davidson “knucklehead” chopper, according to his obituary.

He was a founding member of the first motorcycle club in Maine, The Kosaks, and later became a member of another motorcycle club in Turner.

He and other members then left to form what would become the first Maine chapter of the Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club, based in Canaan.

Spencer is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
