BANGOR – An eighth-grader from Reeds Brook Middle School in Hampden will represent Maine in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee May 31-June 1 in Washington, D.C.

Nicholas Hahn-Miller of Hampden, the son of Greg Miller and Sue Ann Hahn, won the Maine State Spelling Bee on Saturday in the contest sponsored by Bangor Daily News Newspapers in Education at Eastern Maine Community College.

Hahn-Miller entered the state bee as Penobscot County champion. His teacher is Linda McConnell. He is a member of I-team, math team and jazz band, plays trumpet and enjoys kayaking and hiking.

The runner-up was Cumberland County champ Jean McCabe, an eighth-grader at Lincoln Middle School in Portland. She is the daughter of Eric McCabe Johnson and Liz McCabe Park.

Coming in third in the state contest was Holly Stanhope, an eighth-grader at Princeton Elementary School, representing Washington County. She is the daughter of John Stanhope and Nancy James.

Interestingly, SAD 22 in Hampden, Newburgh and Winterport had two county champions this year in the state contest. Hahn-Miller represented Penobscot County.

Eighth-grader Megan Braley of Winterport, who attends Wagner Middle School, was the Waldo County champion. Her school and town are in that county, whereas Reeds Brook in Hampden is in Penobscot. The daughter of Loren and Pamela Braley, she is the pupil of Erica Farrar.

Officials were: Tim Allen, bee master; judges Catherine Haskell, Ann Calderwood and W. Gregory Swett. Special guests were Karen Baldacci, Maine’s First Lady; John Cashwell III, mayor of Bangor; and Dr. Joyce Hedlund, president of EMCC.

As state champion, Hahn-Miller receives an expense-paid trip to Washington, Webster’s Third New International Dictionary and the Samuel Louis Sugarman Award, a savings bond.

McCabe received Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary and a $20 gift certificate to Amazon.com. Stanhope received a $20 gift certificate.

Each county champion received a certificate of achievement, a Maine State Spelling Bee T-shirt, a Bangor Daily News backpack and a $10 gift certificate to Borders.
