Teachers deserve a raise

I am writing in response to Andrew Brennan’s letter titled, “Teachers make too much” (BDN, March 27).

The teacher’s day does not stop at seven hours. I work as an educational technician and when I leave school at the end of the day, the teachers are usually cleaning up their rooms, going to a faculty meeting or helping students who need extra help.

Not only do they stay at school late, they also take the work or tests home that the students have done to correct. Many of today’s teachers are taking night classes to keep up their certifications.

Although Brennan feels that new teachers do not have experience, beginning teachers have had student teaching under the guidance of an experienced teacher. Some of them have had prior experience as an educational technician. Maybe he needs to volunteer at a school and see just what happens in the classroom and all the preparations that go into daily lesson plans.

But wait, you have to pay to get fingerprinted which is something teachers must pay for.

Teachers definitely deserve an increase in pay and more.
