STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Jenna Balent tossed a two-hit shutout, her second in as many days, as the University of Maine softball team earned a 1-0 victory over Stony Brook to take two of three games from the Seawolves as the Black Bears opened America East conference play.
Maine won Saturday’s nightcap 3-0 after dropping the opener 5-3.
In Sunday’s game, Brittany Cheney singled and eventually scored on an error by Stony Brook’s shortstop. Erin Provost singled for Maine’s only other hit. Balent struck out three and walked three. Molly Kestranek and Sarah Hoffman singled for Stony Brook.
In Saturday’s first game, the Seawolves scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Hoffman doubled in a run and scored on a Maine error to rally for the win. Stony Brook’s Suzanne Turek finished with two home runs and a double for two RBIs. Amy Kuhl led Maine with a double and two singles for two RBIs.
In Saturday’s second game, Balent fanned seven while allowing a single apiece to Kestranek and Turek. Maine’s Ashley Waters hit two singles and a triple and scored two runs. Cheney hit a two-run homer.
