Two men were arrested Monday evening after police received a call saying that there was a vehicle operating erratically near State Street in Brewer and it had almost hit about four other vehicles head-on.

Brewer police said they stopped the vehicle on State Street and that both the driver and passenger showed signs of intoxication.

The driver, Kenneth McKusick, 28, of Abbot, was given field sobriety tests and failed them, according to police. Dispatch also reported that McKusick had 13 prior convictions and was driving with a conditional license, including a zero-tolerance policy on alcohol because of a previous OUI.

Both McKusick and his passenger, Joshua Farnham, 22, of Exeter, were taken to the Brewer police station. McKusick blew a low blood alcohol level, so police put him through a drug recognition test. It was determined that he was under the influence of more than one drug, possibly prescription drugs, according to police.

Farnham was out on bail with a condition of no alcohol and had two arrest warrants out in Penobscot County.

Both men were taken to Penobscot County Jail, where McKusick was charged with operating under the influence and operating without a license. Farnham was charged with violation of bail conditions and his two warrants.

McKusick was able to make bail on the same night, but Farnham remained there Tuesday night.
