Center Drive School
ORRINGTON – Times have changed from when Rosie the Riveter was needed to help make war machines for U.S. soldiers involved in World War II, and some young people today have forgotten the sacrifices made by “the Greatest Generation,” two teachers are saying.
These teachers from Center Drive School, who annually produce the spring play, decided this year to teach the cast more than just their lines.
Philippa Harvey, social studies teacher, and Pauline Dickey, music teacher, took the musical play, titled “Kilroy Was Here,” and incorporated the history of the 1940s era into their classroom curriculum.
When the young girls in Harvey’s class found out that women willingly gave up their nylons so the military could use the materials to make parachutes, their mouths dropped, the social studies teacher said.
The pupils also learned the details of local history at the time – including that German spies infiltrated Maine – by becoming involved in the play, said Hannah Ruhlin, a seventh-grader who plays an FBI agent.
The pupils researched the hairstyles, makeup and attire for the play and decorated the stage. The girls in the play ran around the school’s gymnasium in high heels, while their nails were painted bright red and their hair was placed in rollers to create the retro hairstyles.
The patriotic musical is based loosely on a real-life person, James Kilroy, who inadvertently created a folk legend. Kilroy was a shipyard inspector who marked everything he inspected with “Kilroy was here” and unbeknownst to him, soldiers adopted the saying as their own slogan.
The play centers on a United Service Organizations club and how the main character, Pvt. Joe Kilroy, discovers German spies in the club. A total of 32 pupils out of the crew of 55 actually hit the stage, with all others doing production jobs.

Marine science education
Nearly 150 fifth-graders from Old Town Elementary School and Weatherbee School in Hampden traveled April 4-6 to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland to participate in an interactive learning program, “Next Wave: A Digital Marine Science Experience.” Fifth- and sixth-graders from every Maine community have the opportunity to participate in the program, free of charge.
In 2005, the institute completed construction of a research facility that promises to be one of the world’s most significant marine research laboratories to be built in the last decade. Features include an interactive education space, the Sam L. Cohen Center for Interactive Learning.
Specifically designed to make science more accessible, the Cohen Center uses technology to engage middle school pupils with cutting-edge marine research. Next Wave is a 21/2-hour, technology-enabled, hands-on learning experience that includes a multimedia group presentation along with free-standing digital kiosks -LabVenture Stations – that guide students through a series of research activities.
The institute serves 200-300 students a week and already has booked schools in 14 of Maine’s 16 counties – more than 4,800 pupils. A mix of statewide and local donors makes the program possible. Local support for Next Wave includes contributions from Central Maine Power and the Birch Cove Fund of the Maine Community Foundation. To learn more about the program, call 228-1638.

ORONO – Barbara Beers of Dixmont, a 1974 University of Maine graduate with more than 20 years’ experience in fundraising and related activities, has been named vice president for development.
Beers will oversee UM development activities, including private fundraising, donor relations, corporate support and stewardship. In January, UM began a six-year, $150 million private fundraising campaign – the largest such initiative in the school’s history.
Beers was chosen after a national search. Since 1992, she has been president of Beers Associates, Consultants in Philanthropy, a Bangor-based fundraising firm that provided development services to Maine nonprofit organizations. She was a Maine Public Broadcasting Network executive for 15 years, serving as director of public information and then as director of development.
Her consulting work has included guiding campaigns for several colleges, including the University of Maine’s campaign to raise funds to build the Buchanan Alumni House – the largest single fundraising effort in UM history. Her firm also was responsible for the fundraising for the National Folk Festival in Bangor and providing an endowment for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra.
In late February, year-to-year giving managed by UMaine’s development office was up by 60 percent, already exceeding the Fiscal Year 2005 total.
