BALTIMORE – Scott Robinson struck out 19 batters to come within one strikeout of the University of Maine record to lead the Black Bears to a 2-1 America East baseball victory over Maryland Baltimore County Friday night. Robinson allowed 10 hits but only one walk.

BALTIMORE – Scott Robinson struck out 19 batters to come within one strikeout of the University of Maine record to lead the Black Bears to a 2-1 America East baseball victory over Maryland Baltimore County Friday night.

Robinson allowed 10 hits but only one walk.

Leadoff hitter Joe Hough did just that in grand style with a triple, three singles, a stolen base, and three RBIs for the Bears. Danny Menendez had a double, two singles, a steal and one RBI in the 13-hit attack.

Brewer freshman Kevin McAvoy hit a leadoff homer in the third and singled. Robinson improved his record to 4-2 with the complete game.

Joe Fowler led the UMBC Retrievers with a double, three singles, and three RBIs.

At Waterville, Trinity College scored twice in the fifth inning and added a lone run in the seventh inning to fight back from a 3-1 deficit.

Neal White, Matt Stafford and Sean Killeen each had an RBI single for Trinity. Erik Paisley added a single for the Bantams. Killeen totaled four hits and also drove in two runs.

Andy Carr paced Colby with two hits and two RBIs. Colin Riggs had a double while Nick Spillane and Tom Salemy each added a single for the White Mules.

USM 12, Bridgewater State 2

At Bridgewater, Mass., the Huskies erupted for eight runs in the seventh inning for a victory over Bridgewater State on Thursday.

Max Arsenault, Eddie Skeffington and Nick Vardaro each hit a home run for the Huskies. Arsenault also had a double with two RBIs.

Adam Ross picked up the win, going eight innings allowing just two earned runs on seven hits.

Thomas sweeps Newbury

At Waterville, Thomas College swept away Newbury College 11-0 and 14-2, both in five innings.

In the first game, Joy Ireland pitched a complete-game three-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Kristen Burke and Ireland both had two hits, two runs scored and drove in a run for the Terriers.

In the second game, Nikki Smith scattered two runs on two hits while fanning 10 for the Terriers.

Lindsey Sierra had two hits and three RBIs while Jennifer Higgins had a pair of hits and scored a pair of runs.

Thomas sweeps Maine Maritime

At Waterville Thursday, solid pitching led the Thomas College Terriers to a doubleheader sweep of Maine Maritime Academy, 8-1 and 9-1.

In the first game Joy Ireland, a senior from Clinton, pitched a two-hitter while striking out 15 batters and walking three for 5-9 Thomas.

In the second game, sophomore Bucksport native Nikki Smith pitched a five-inning, three-hitter with 15 strikeouts and three walks.
