GREENVILLE – In an effort to improve the town’s licensed landfill and reduce costs, selectmen are considering a change in the way demolition debris is handled.

At their meeting Wednesday, selectmen discussed ending the practice of burying demolition debris on site in lieu of dumping the material into a container and taking it to another licensed facility, such as Waste Management in Norridgewock.

“It would help improve the water quality at the landfill,” Greenville Town Manager John Simko said Wednesday.

Because the groundwater is contaminated at the landfill, town officials are moving forward with changes to improve the facility. The Department of Environmental Protection is expected to rule on the continued use of the landfill in the near future.

Selectmen on Wednesday also discussed a fee system for the disposal of demolition debris.

The board will revisit the issue at its April 19 meeting when selectmen may vote to recommend the change and send it for adoption at the annual June town meeting.

Simko and Public Works Foreman Mike Thornton support a fee schedule for the deposit of demolition debris at the landfill.

Under the proposal, a $10 fee would be charged per sofa, mattress or box spring; $15 for each pickup load or single-axle trailer load of demolition debris; and $30 per load using a dual-axle truck or trailer.

It was suggested Wednesday that drivers of tri-axle trucks or trailers should not be permitted to dump demolition debris at the landfill; rather, the driver would be required to haul the material to the contracted facility.

“I think the concept is a very good one,” Selectman Dan McLaughlin said Wednesday.

To complete the change, Simko said the, town could place a rented, roll-off container at the landfill to collect the debris and then hire a contractor to take the material to the Norridgewock facility.

Savings would be reaped because the town no longer would have to apply cover material to the pile, Simko said.
